The Decolonising Memory project and dance troupe were at the Welcome Village today, teaching and performing the memorial dance for @universityofbristol students (and anyone else who came along) as part of Freshers Week! Thank you everyone who joined in, good luck with your studies, and welcome to Bristol. Remember that there are a lot of different kinds of knowlegde that should be valued, to question everything to its foundations and that change is possible!

Colonisation and racism is not an event it is a system we are all born into. It is happening now.

On Tuesday August 23rd at 6pm we performed our mem

On Tuesday August 23rd at 6pm we performed our memorial dance to mark the UNESCO Day of Remembrance of the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans and its Abolition.

The performance took place on College Green, outside the 'Colston Window' of Bristol Cathedral. If you look closely at the large window pane behind us, you can see where references to Edward Colston have been removed from the stained glass.

Thank you to those of you who were new to the dance and joined us in this act of memorialisation. There will be further opportunities to dance with us, as an act of memory and atonement. We also have a video tutorial teaching the dance available on Youtube, see the link in our bio.

If you aren't able to get to any of our workshops, don't worry - we're creating an online tutorial so you can learn the dance from wherever you are. Watch this space for news and updates.

There are snippets of our workshops in previous posts and you can still view the whole dance as performed at Bristol Harbour Festival on YouTube. See links in our bio.

This free event is open to all and will run 12 midday to 8pm. We'll be there running a dance workshop from 6pm where you can learn key phrases from the memorial folk dance, and there will also be a full performance of the dance to mark the day.
